AFTER THE STORM
Signs your property needs storm damage restoration
Storm damage is not always obvious from the ground. Some problems show up immediately, others appear days or weeks later as water works its way into the structure.
- Missing, cracked, or lifted shingles after high winds or hail
- Water stains appearing on ceilings or walls after a storm
- Basement flooding after heavy rain (especially with a combined sewer connection)
- Fallen tree limbs that damaged roofing, siding, or fencing
- Windows broken or cracked by wind-driven debris
- Gutters pulled away from fascia or downspouts disconnected
- Siding panels cracked, dented, or torn off
- Sump pump running continuously or failing during power outage
If any of these sound familiar, call (708) 719-6282. We assess storm damage and file the insurance claim for you.

Storm damage risks in the Chicago area
Chicago averages 38 thunderstorm days per year, with severe weather season running from April through September. The flat terrain and proximity to Lake Michigan create conditions for fast-moving storms with high winds, heavy rain, large hail, and occasional tornadoes.
Wind damage. Straight-line winds in severe thunderstorms regularly exceed 60 mph across the Chicago metro. Wind this strong lifts shingles, tears siding panels, snaps tree limbs, and drives rain into wall cavities through gaps that were not visible before the storm.
Hail damage. Hailstones of 1 inch or larger damage asphalt shingles, dent gutters and downspouts, crack vinyl siding, and break window glass. Hail damage to roofing is often not visible from the ground. A professional inspection with a ladder is the only reliable way to assess the condition of your roof after a hail event.
Basement flooding. Chicago’s combined sewer system can back up during heavy rain, sending stormwater and sewage through floor drains. Homes without backwater valves or overhead sewer conversions are at risk during every significant storm. Power outages knock out sump pumps, and battery backups only last 4 to 8 hours under continuous load.
Tree and debris damage. Mature trees across Logan Square, Lincoln Park, Humboldt Park, and the western suburbs are vulnerable to high winds, especially when leaf canopy is full in summer. A large limb can puncture roofing, crush gutters, and open the building envelope to rain.
Storm damage restoration services we offer in Chicagoland
- Emergency tarping and board-up. We secure damaged roofing and openings to prevent further water intrusion from subsequent rain.
- Water extraction and drying. Truck-mounted extractors for flooded basements and lower levels. Commercial dehumidifiers and air movers for structural drying.
- Roof inspection and repair. We assess wind and hail damage from the roof, not the ground. Missing, cracked, or lifted shingles are documented and repaired or replaced.
- Siding repair and replacement. Cracked, dented, or torn siding panels are matched and replaced. We handle vinyl, fiber cement, and aluminum siding.
- Window and door replacement. Storm-broken windows and damaged entry doors are measured, ordered, and installed.
- Tree and debris removal. Fallen limbs and storm debris are removed from the structure and yard.
- Structural repairs. Framing, joists, and load-bearing members damaged by fallen trees or wind are repaired or replaced with permits and inspections.
- Insurance claim management. Complete damage documentation, Xactimate scope, adjuster coordination, supplement negotiation, and direct billing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cost varies widely depending on the type and extent of damage. A roof tarp and minor shingle repair is a different scope than a full roof replacement with interior water damage cleanup. Every job starts with a free inspection and estimate. We submit the scope to your insurance and bill directly for covered losses.
Yes. Wind, hail, and lightning damage are covered under virtually all standard homeowner policies. Flood damage from rising water (not roof leaks or wind-driven rain) typically requires a separate flood policy. Sewer backup coverage depends on whether you carry a sewer and drain endorsement. We document the damage source and work with your adjuster.
Immediately. A damaged roof with no tarp will take on more water with the next rain. A flooded basement with standing water grows mold within 24 to 48 hours. The faster we secure and dry the property, the less total damage and the lower the repair cost.
You can, but hail damage to shingles is often invisible from the ground. Granule loss, hairline cracks, and lifted tabs only show up during a roof-level inspection. If a storm produced hail of 1 inch or larger in your area, we recommend a free roof inspection before deciding whether to file.
Yes. If the damage is severe enough that repairs are not cost-effective, we coordinate full roof replacement. We handle material selection, permits, installation, and inspection. Roofing is included in the overall insurance claim scope.
Sump pump failure during a power outage is one of the most common causes of basement flooding during storms. We extract the water, dry the structure, and recommend battery-backup sump pump options to prevent future failures. If the existing pump failed mechanically, we refer to a licensed plumber for replacement.
We tarp damaged roofing, board up broken windows and doors, and set up water extraction and drying equipment on the first visit. These emergency measures prevent additional water intrusion and mold growth while the insurance claim and repair scope are being finalized.
Yes. Redefined Restoration holds Illinois License #70156933. Our technicians are IICRC-certified for water damage restoration. Roofing, electrical, and plumbing work is performed by licensed tradespeople. We carry general liability and workers' compensation on every job.
Emergency tarping and water extraction happen within the first 24 to 48 hours. Structural drying takes 3 to 7 days. Roof, siding, and interior reconstruction can take 2 to 8 weeks depending on material availability, permit requirements, and the extent of the damage.
Stay safe and do not enter areas with structural damage, downed power lines, or standing water. Take photos and video of all visible damage from a safe distance. Contact your insurance company to open a claim. Then call (708) 719-6282 for emergency securing and mitigation. Do not make permanent repairs before your insurance adjuster has documented the damage.
